Marine biology where community-based marine protected areas were pioneered: Silliman's Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences grew out of the university's 1974 Marine Laboratory in Dumaguete, and the surrounding Negros Oriental reefs — including Apo Island's famous sanctuary — are the teaching sites.
